We previously covered which Aliso Viejo elementary schools serve Aliso Viejo and which school districts those belong to in a previous post. A quick summary of the parts of that post that pertain to the middle schools:
- Most of Aliso Viejo is served by the Capistrano Unified School District.
- There is a section of Laguna Audubon zoned for the Laguna Beach Unified School District and a section of homes near Moulton and Via Iglesia zoned for the Saddleback Unified School District.
- There is a charter school and there are private school options within the city limits that are not geographically limited to Aliso Viejo.
In this post, we focus on the Capistrano Unified middle schools and answer:
How big are the Aliso Viejo middle schools?
How many students are in each class?
And how do they compare to each other?
The Two Main Middle Schools in Aliso Viejo
Most homes in Aliso Viejo are served by the Capistrano Unified School District and are zoned for one of these two middle schools:
- Aliso Viejo Middle School (aka AVMS)
- Don Juan Avila Middle School (aka DJAMS)
Quick Comparison: Enrollment and Class Size
School Total Students Student-Teacher Ratio
AVMS ~803 ~23:1
DJAMS ~863 ~23:1
What Do These Numbers Mean?
Before comparing schools, it helps to understand what these stats actually represent.
Student-Teacher Ratio
This is often used as a proxy for class size, but it’s not exactly the same.
A 23:1 ratio doesn’t necessarily mean 23 students in every classroom. It reflects:
- All teaching staff (not just core classroom teachers)
- Variations between grade levels
Still, it’s a useful way to compare schools at a high level.
How Do These Compare to the District, County, and State?
Student-teacher ratio:
- Capistrano Unified: ~23:1
- Orange County: generally in the low-to-mid 20s
- California: ~21:1
👉 What that means:
The Aliso Viejo middle schools fall within a fairly typical range for student-teacher ratios.
What This Means for Buyers
If you’re buying a home in Aliso Viejo and looking at middle schools:
