Which Schools Serve Aliso Viejo? (Public, Charter, and Private Options)

School boundaries can impact long-term home values. That's why one of the first questions we get about moving to Aliso Viejo is:

“How are the schools?”

Our Aliso Viejo school series will provide some answers to that question. We'll start with Aliso Viejo elementary schools and give an overview of what schools are in town.

In this post, we’ll walk through:

  • The main public schools serving Aliso Viejo
  • A charter school option
  • Private schools within the city
  • And the small areas that fall outside the main district

[Note: We provide school information as a resource, but we don’t rank or recommend schools. Every family’s needs are different, and we encourage you to research and visit schools to determine what’s the best fit.]

Public Schools in Aliso Viejo (Capistrano Unified)

Most homes in Aliso Viejo are served by the Capistrano Unified School District.

There are four Aliso Viejo elementary schools in CUSD:

👉 These four schools make up the core elementary school options for most Aliso Viejo neighborhoods.

At the middle and high school levels, students typically continue on to:

Capistrano Unified has a school locator where you can plug in a specific address to see the schools assigned to that home.

Important Exceptions (Different School Districts)

While most of the city feeds into Capistrano Unified, there are two smaller areas that do not.

Laguna Beach Unified School District

Some homes in Aliso Viejo are assigned to the Laguna Beach Unified School District.

At the elementary level, those students attend:

LBUSD publishes specific streets that are assigned to Laguna Beach schools. The Aliso Viejo streets are located in the Laguna Audubon area, by Aliso Creek and El Toro, so if you’re buying in the Audubon, you'll want to double check the schools.

Saddleback Valley Unified School District

Another portion of Aliso Viejo falls within the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

At the elementary level, those students attend:

Based on Saddleback district boundary maps, this appears to affect homes near Moulton Parkway, including parts of the New World neighborhood. As always, assignments should be verified by address.

👉 Key takeaway:
Almost all Aliso Viejo homes are in Capistrano Unified, but school assignments can change by street, so it’s always worth verifying for a specific property.

Charter Schools in Aliso Viejo

Aliso Viejo also has a charter school option, which is not tied to neighborhood boundaries:

As a charter school, Journey School is not assigned based on home address, but instead uses an application and lottery system. This makes the school separate from neighborhood-based public schools, which is the focus of this series.

Private Schools in Aliso Viejo

There are also several private school options located within the city:

These schools serve families looking for alternatives to the public system and are not tied to district boundaries, so for purposes of this series, we'll keep the focus on the public schools.

What This Means for Buyers (and Homeowners)

School boundaries are one of the most overlooked and important factors in real estate.

In Aliso Viejo:

  • Most homes → Capistrano Unified
  • Some pockets → Laguna Beach Unified or Saddleback Valley Unified
  • Charter and private options → available regardless of location
