We previously covered which Aliso Viejo middle schools serve most of Aliso Viejo (Aliso Viejo Middle School and Don Juan Avila Middle School), and the alternatives within the city.
In this post, we will look at how the main school rating sources rate or rank AVMS and DJAMS.
A Quick Note
We provide school information as a resource, but we don’t rank or recommend schools. Every family’s needs are different, and we encourage you to research and visit schools to determine what’s the best fit.
The Main School Rating Sources
There are four commonly used sources for school ratings:
- GreatSchools
- Niche
- U.S. News & World Report
- California School Dashboard
Each one looks at schools differently, which is why the results don’t always match.
GreatSchools (1–10 Scale)
GreatSchools is a national nonprofit and the platform that most of the top real estate websites use (currently Realtor.com and Zillow for example).
What it measures:
- Student progress: a measure of how students' scores gained year to year
- Test scores
What you’ll see:
- A simple rating from 1 to 10
- No rankings

|---|---|---|---|
School | Overall rating | Student Progress | Test Score |
AVMS | 9 | 8 | 9 |
DJAMS | 8 | 6 | 10 |
AVMS has the highest rating Overall with a 10 and the highest Student Progress score with an 8.
DJAMS has the highest Test Score rating with a 10.
For a deeper dive
Greatschools goes even deeper with test scores by splitting scores into Math, English, and Science. It also splits up the data by ethnicity, income, and disability. Finally, it does have parent reviews. For parent reviews, Don Juan Avila has a 3.1 and Aliso Viejo has a 2.8.
👉 How to think about it:
GreatSchools overall school rating is designed to be quick and easy to understand, but it compresses a lot of data into one number.
Niche (Letter Grades)
Niche is used by Homes.com among other sites and takes a broader approach.
What it measures:
- Survey responses 65%
- Academics 15%
- Teachers 10%
- Diversity and culture 10%
What you’ll see:
- A letter grade (A, B, etc.)
- Rankings within California and Orange County
Niche AV middle schools ratings | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
School | Overall rating | Academics | Teachers | Diversity | CA Ranking |
DJAMS | A+ | A | A+ | A | 54 |
AVMS | A | A | A+ | A | 64 |
Both AVMS and DJAMS received at least an A in all of the listed categories. DJAMS received an A+ overall and both schools received an A+ for their teachers.
The rankings show very little difference as well (California percentiles in parentheses):
- DJAMS 54 (99%)
- AVMS 64 (98%)
👉 How to think about it:
Niche blends data + real-world experience, which can give more context beyond test scores.
U.S. News & World Report (Scores 0-100 and Rankings)
If you Google-search the best middle schools, U.S. News comes up. Better known for its college rankings, U.S. News started ranking middle schools in 2021.
What it measures:
- Math and reading proficiency
- How the school compares to other schools with similar demographics
- Student-teacher ratios (as a tiebreaker)
What you’ll see:
- Overall scores 0-100
- Rankings (statewide)
U.S. News AV middle school rankings | |||
|---|---|---|---|
School | Overall ranking | Reading | Math |
DJAMS | 146 | 152 | 165 |
AVMS | 200 | 241 | 175 |
DJAMS ranked higher than AVMS in all categories, but if you consider their percentile rankings:
- DJAMS 146 (98%)
- AVMS 200 (98%)
…both are in the 98th percentile for California middle schools.
👉 How to think about it:
U.S. News focuses heavily on academic performance and comparisons across regions.
California School Dashboard (Color-Coded System)
The California School Dashboard is the official California state system.
What it measures:
- Chronic absenteeism
- Suspension rates
- Academic performance (English Language Arts and Math)
- English-learner progress (where there are a significant number of English-learners)
What you’ll see:
- Color-coded indicators from Blue (highest, then Green, Yellow, Orange) to Red (lowest)
- No single overall score or rankings
California Dashboard AV middle school ratings | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
School | Chronic Absenteeism | Suspension Rate | English Learner Progress | English Language Arts | Math |
AVMS | Orange | Green | Blue | Green | Blue |
Don Juan Avila | Yellow | Green | Yellow | Green | Blue |
Both AVMS and DJAMS received the same color code for Suspension Rate, English Language Arts, and Math. AVMS received one level higher for Chronic Absenteeism and English Learner Progress. Neither school received the lowest color, red.
👉 How to think about it:
The Dashboard gives the most detailed breakdown, but it requires more interpretation.
Why the Ratings Don’t Match
This is the key point.
Each platform answers a slightly different question:
- GreatSchools → “How does this school perform overall?”
- Niche → “What is the overall experience like?”
- U.S. News → “How does this school compare academically?”
- California Dashboard → “How is this school performing across multiple metrics over time?”
👉 Because they measure different things, they produce different results.
How we used school ratings for our own kids' schools
Instead of looking for one “correct” rating, we thought it would be more helpful to:
- Look at multiple sources together
- Understand what each one is measuring
- Use them as a starting point for further research
- Visit the schools in person wherever possible
- Come to our own conclusion about the best school for our child
What This Means for Aliso Viejo Buyers
When comparing Aliso Viejo middle schools:
- It’s normal to see different ratings across sites
- That doesn’t mean one is right and one is wrong
- It means each site is looking at the school through a different lens
